The discovery of the ability, previously not known, of a group of immune system cells, called Atypical B cells (ABCs), to fight malaria and other infectious diseases has gone a long way in helping scientists debunk conventional thinking on the role of ‘junk cells’ in fighting diseases. According to the scientists, ABCs could also prove vital in the development of new treatments for chronic autoimmune conditions like lupus.
This provides fresh insight into the role of the immune system in fighting infections and brings scientists closer to harnessing the natural defences of the body to fight malaria. The researchers also suggested that ABCs have long been associated with malaria, as patients suffering from the disease have a greater number of these cells in their system as compared to the general population.
