Established initially as Northwest Community College in 1975 in Terrace, British Columbia (BC), Coast Mountain College (CMTN) is an accredited institution of post-secondary education that serves the diverse communities of BC’s beautiful northwest region, and learners from around the world. Small class sizes, online programs, health and human services programs, university credit programs, apprenticeship and trades foundation programs are all striking features of CMTN’s basket of offerings.
Apart from over 200 programs on offer across the arts and sciences, CMTN also provides students exciting opportunities via its degree partnerships, field schools and university transfers. Students can complete the first two years of a four-year bachelor degree at CMTN, and exercise the option to transfer directly into the third year of the appropriate degree program at various partner universities in BC and around the world, or transfer credits to one of CMTN’s many partner institutions throughout the globe. Knowledgeable and experienced faculty and excellent support services complement the educational opportunities at the college.
CMTN offers a personalized, high-quality educational experience at affordable prices. The college is well on its way to being the higher-education destination of choice for those seeking a sound academic footing combined with experiential, place-based learning. CMTN’s stunning location, with its rugged landscapes, deep flowing rivers, clean air and rich history and culture, provides students with an immersive experience, and a chance to expand their horizons and be connected to the environment.

One recent development is of particular note for international students – a previous international student and now local business owner has established a new CAD 1,000 award for future international students to help with the costs of tuition and living. It will be awarded twice a year, based on academic standing, career goals, and behavior.
While classrooms and IT facilities are invested in on a regular basis, the heritage of the college is also celebrated – exemplified by the raising of a new totem pole outside the student housing building on the Terrace campus last year.
Many of the advances at the college come from the student body too – such as the formation last year of a new Safe Spaces Movement to promote inclusivity among students.
