Standard Entry Requirements

The Master of Research (MRes) is Macquarie University's two year (equivalent full-time) research training pathway program to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Philosophy (MPhil).

The Master of Research equips students with intensive research preparation before beginning doctoral study. The minimum requirement for admission to an MRes degree is:

AQF 7 (Bachelors) or higher award from a recognised institution

MQ Graduates (from 2020 onwards): An overall WAM of 65+ and a WAM of 70+ at or above 3000 level

All Other Applicants: Minimum overall GPA of 4.38 on a 7 point scale and GPA of 5.25 at 300or above 3000 level

A research proposal (a short paragraph is sufficient).

Recognition of Prior Learning

You may be eligible for admission directly into the second year of the Master of Research if:

You hold an honours degree or,

A masters degree

You may apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) up to 80 credit points. If you are seeking direct entry into Year 2 of the program with RPL, please select the MRes course on your application. You will be required to provide a more detailed research proposal (approximately 1 page describing your proposed project).

English language requirements

  • IELTS Academic - IELTS of 6.5 overall with minimum 6.0 in each band, or equivalent
  • TOEFL iBT - 83 (Reading - 13; Writing - 21; Listening - 12; Speaking - 18)
  • PTE Academic - 58 minimum 52 in each band, or equivalent
  • Cambridge English (C1A or C2P) - 180 minimum 169 in each band, or equivalent
  • OET - (Reading - C+; Writing - C+; Listening - C/C+; Speaking - C/C+)
  • DET - 115 minimum 110 in each band, or equivalent
