What will I learn?

Tackle current issues in the arts, humanities, social sciences, business or computing by blending your studies in mathematics and statistics with their application to a secondary field of interest. Mathematical Science is key to understanding and changing the world around us and will prepare you for a wide range of career opportunities. Areas of Emphasis: Economics; Computer Science.

Major (Honours Program)

Knowledge of Mathematics and Statistics is crucial for understanding our world. This unique program provides a core of both mathematics and statistics with a choice of a Mathematics stream or a Statistics stream. This major also requires the completion of an area of emphasis as listed. Students are encouraged to speak with a Program Counsellor when choosing courses for the selected stream and area of emphasis.

Students may enter this major in Semester 1 or any semester thereafter. A student wishing to declare the major must consult the Faculty Advisor. A total of 20.00 credits is required to complete the Major which includes at least 10.00 credits in Mathematics & Statistics, 0.50 credits in Computing and Information Science, and an additional 2.50 credits in an area of emphasis. Of the total credits required, students are required to complete 2.00 mathematics and/or statistics credits at the 4000 level and an additional 3.00 mathematics and/or statistics credits must be at the 3000 or 4000 level.

Entry requirements

For international students

The secondary school graduation certificate which would admit a student to an internationally recognized university in his or her home country is normally acceptable for admission to the University of Guelph.

English Proficiency Requirements

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6

Cambridge English: C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency - Minimum overall score of 176 with no band less than 169.

Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) - Minimum overall band score of 70

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-based: minimum total score of 89 with no individual scaled score less than 21; Computer-based: minimum score of 250; Paper-based: minimum score of 600

Duolingo English Test - Minimum overall score of 110. Individual subscores may be considered.

Pearson Test of English (PTE) - Minimum score of 60 and no score less than 60 for any individual component

Advanced Level of the English Language Certificate Program - Successful completion of the University of Guelph, Open Learning Advanced Level of the English Language Certificate Program (Levels 9 and 10).
