What will I learn?

The Fashion Design Diploma program is an excellent fit for those who see fabric as so much more than clothes. LaSalle College Vancouver’s Fashion program prepares students to thrive in the burgeoning fashion industry.

Students learn the fundamentals of fashion design, including tailoring, flat pattern drafting, draping, textiles and computer pattern drafting, from instructors who have worked first-hand in the business.

Course Objectives

The Fashion Design program offers the ability to transform design ideas into garments and accessories as well as knowledge of the business side of the fashion industry.

The design segment of the program is intended to help students develop skills in garments construction and design including tailoring, flat pattern drafting and draping as well as computer pattern drafting and grading to provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of apparel engineering.

In addition, marketing courses are designed to enable the students to develop, analyze and implement effective market strategies.

This program has been approved by the registrar of the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training.

Employment

The faculty encourages creativity and provides the opportunity for students to learn hands-on skills using traditional tools as well as industrial equipment similar to those found in the fashion design field.

The combination of professional marketing skills and technical knowledge is designed to prepare students to seek entry-level positions in the industry such as a junior designer, pattern grader, management trainees, visual merchandisers and assistant merchandise buyers.

Career Opportunities

Alumni work in the fashion business as designers, production assistants, pattern makers, retail and fashion house managers, visual merchandisers, stylists and brand buyers. Some have launched their own fashion label, while others have found rewarding careers working with well-established brands. Others have found work as stylists or in the costume department of major film and television productions. Graduates have also entered the fast-paced world of buying, marketing and fashion PR.

Entry requirements

For international students

Prospective students who wish to attend LaSalle College Vancouver and do not qualify as a mature student must have successfully completed the requirements for secondary school graduation or equivalent, as set by the recognized legal authority in the jurisdiction where secondary school was completed.

IELTS (Academic): 5.5

TOEFL iBT: 75

Cambridge: B2 First 162+

PTE-A Pearson: 45 with min. 51 in writing

Duolingo: 85-90

Level completion from an accepted language school

55 percent in English 12, English Literature 12, English 12 First Peoples, Communications 12 or Technical and Professional Communications 12 or equivalent.
