What will I learn?

The staff of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology is currently carrying out research in various aspects of cellular, molecular, reproductive, and tumour immunology; microbial pathogenesis; and the development of novel methods for the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.

The Department is well equipped with the modern facilities required for research in medical microbiology and immunology.

Program Requirements:

Students are required to complete a minimum of ?12 in coursework and a thesis.

Course requirements depend on the area of specialization and the undergraduate background of the student.

Coursework:

MMI 605 - Current Topics in Infection and Immunity

At least two ?3 graduate-level course

Course selection should be discussed with the supervisor

Selected courses may be taken from other departments

Students must participate each year and must register once for credit during the program in the Medical Microbiology and Immunology seminar course, MMI 501.

Additional coursework may be required

Thesis:

Registration in 900-level THES. A candidate for the PhD degree must submit an acceptable thesis and defend it orally. The Department recommends the thesis be written in the traditional format.

Candidacy Exam:

After completion of required coursework, students must pass a candidacy examination in order to continue in the program. The candidacy exam consists of a written research proposal and oral defense of that proposal. Students must complete MMI 605 prior to their candidacy exam. The candidacy exam must be completed within the first 30 months of the student's program.

Ethics Requirement:

Students must fulfill the FGSR Academic Integrity and Ethics Training Requirement. One hour of ethics training is the MANDATORY session Introduction to Ethics and Personal Responsibility in the Lab given by the Department of Biochemistry. See the Graduate Program Guidelines for information on fulfilling the remaining 7 hours.

Academic Standing Requirement:

Students are required to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 with no grade less than B-.

Residence Requirement:

The minimum period of residence is three years of fulltime attendance at the University of Alberta.

Length of program:

The time required to complete the program depends on the student's background and the nature of the thesis project. Normally, a minimum of four years of full-time study and research is required for the PhD degree.

The maximum time to complete the PhD program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is six years.

Entry requirements

For international students

The Department's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree in a related discipline with an admission GPA of at least 3.3 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution.

It is highly recommended that international applicants hold a Master's degree in a related area of Basic Science; applicants without this credential should specifically address the suitability of their undergraduate training to our program.

English Language Proficiency:

  • a minimum TOEFL score of 96 (Internet-based) or equivalent
  • Academic IELTS: 6.5, with at least 6.0 on each test band;
  • CAEL: overall 70 with at least 60 on each subtest;
  • PTE Academic: 61 with a minimum band score of 60.

International applications are due by April 1st for September intake and August 1st for January intake.
