What will I learn?

This specialization provides advanced study for individuals who work with adults in the capacity of teaching, administration, or community leadership within a variety of institutional, community, and workplace settings throughout the world.

Program Requirements:

In addition to the department core courses (?6), students must complete specialization core courses and optional courses for a total of ?33 for course-based programs, or ?24 for thesis-based programs.

EDPS 580 - Contemporary Issues in Education: Perspectives on Policy and Practice

EDPS 581 - Introduction to Evaluating Educational Research

Specialization core courses (?6):

EDPS 521 - Adult Learning and Development

EDPS 577 - Foundations of Adult and Higher Education

Options/Electives:

500-level and above courses taken across the department or faculty, chosen in consultation with the supervisor or program advisor.

Students may undertake a supervised individual study course if permitted by their specialization program and only with prior approval by their advisor/supervisor and the Graduate Coordinator. Permission will not be granted if the proposed content is available through regular course offerings.

Course-based Programs:

EDPS 900 - Directed Research Project

Thesis-based Program:

Registration in 900-level THES. All students in a thesis-based Master of Education shall present a thesis embodying the results of their research on a topic approved by their supervisor.

Ethics Requirement:

Students in both the course-based and thesis-based Master of Education with a specialization in Adult, Community and Higher Education fulfill the FGSR Academic Integrity and Ethics Training Requirement through successful completion of EDPS 581 and of the FGSR Graduate Ethics Training course.

Professional Development Requirement:

Students in both the course-based and thesis-based Master of Education with a specialization in Adult, Community and Higher Education fulfill the FGSR Professional Development Requirement through their program.

Length of Program:

There is no residence requirement for the Master of Education program.

The maximum time to complete the course-based MEd program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is six years.

The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MEd program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is four years.

Entry requirements

For international students

The Department's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last 60 of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.

English Language Proficiency

a minimum TOEFL score of 93 (Internet-based) with a minimum of 24 on the speaking and writing bands of the test, or equivalent. (FGSR's minimum for the reading and listening bands of the TOEFL test is 21.)
a minimum score of 70 on the CAEL exam
a minimum of 7.0 on each band on the IELTS with an overall minimum score of 7.0,
a minimum score of 63 on the Pearson Test of English (PTE).

Master of Education programs: There are two application deadlines for M.Ed. admissions: October 1st and March 1st.
