To meet the demand for science professionals, Trent and UOIT offer innovative, interdisciplinary M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs that focus on the scientific foundation of materials research.

At Trent, you will build on fundamental science principles for your independent research project, developing skills in project management and effective communication of technical information. Comprised of coursework and a thesis, your degree will prepare you for a career in research and development in the public or private sector.

  • M.Sc. students may apply for transfer to the Ph.D. program after one year.

Entry requirements

For international students

  • B.Sc. Honours degree in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or equivalent qualifications
  • Minimum B+ (77%) or equivalent in the work of the last four semesters or the last two undergraduate years (last ten full credits)

The following tests are acceptable forms of proof of English language proficiency:

  • TOEFL iBT, iBT Home Edition, iBT Paper Edition (Test of English as a Foreign Language). The minimum acceptance score is 93 (with a minimum score of 22 in both speaking and writing).
  • CAEL or CAEL online (Canadian Academic English Language Test). The minimum acceptable score is 60, with at least 60 in Writing Proficiency.
  • Successful completion of Trent University – ESL Academic English 1 and 2 - must be completed prior to beginning Graduate Studies
  • IELTS Academic (International English language Testing Services). The minimum acceptance score is 6.5, with no band below 6.0.
