What will I learn?

Fitness and Health Promotion is a two-year Ontario college diploma program for students interested in the fitness industry. Students will learn anatomy and physiology, nutrition, principles of fitness, athletic injuries and personal training. Graduates of this program are able to perform the roles and responsibilities of a fitness consultant or personal trainer.

As a student in our health and fitness program, youll study exercise science courses in anatomy and physiology, nutrition, principles of fitness, training with weights, exercise physiology, athletic injuries, and personal training. Additionally, youll experience a variety of health and fitness courses to help you learn the valuable business skills that youll need to start a successful career in fitness club management, or how to manage a club of your own. Our health and fitness program provides great hands-on, practical experience at Fanshawes on-site fitness centre. Youll also get two extensive on-site work experiences at one of the employers or community partners of the program.

After you graduate from this program with a health promotion diploma, you can find employment with existing commercial and non-for-profit fitness agencies, rehabilitation services, government oriented fitness programs, agencies serving youth, and many others.

If youre interested in furthering your studies, the health and fitness course will also give you a great foundation to pursue a degree in kinesiology or nutrition. There are also several articulations in place that give you a head-start on a university degree or a second college diploma! One of the transfer agreements is with Hartpury College in Gloucester, England.

The Fitness and Health Promotion program prepares graduates to perform the roles and responsibilities of a fitness consultant and personal trainer. Fanshawe Colleges Fitness and Health Promotion Faculty team consists of highly educated industry specialists, with both knowledge and experience in exercise program design, exercise prescription, fitness and health assessment, behaviour change, fitness marketing and sales, business ownership, sports and universal nutrition, as well as individual and population-based health promotion.

Graduates of Fanshawes Fitness and Health Promotion program will have the opportunity to pursue employment with a wide spectrum of employers including not-for-profit centres, commercial gyms, police applicant testing, workplace wellness corporations and performance-based specialized fitness studios where they will use their skills to create supportive environments for physical activity and enhancing fitness.
