What will I learn?

Course Overview

REMEDI offers PhD degrees within our research areas as described below. Admission to a research degree is at the discretion of the potential supervisor, the Head of Discipline and the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences and is based on a proposal by the applicant following discussion with the member of academic staff who research area is most appropriate.

The Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) is a world-class biomedical research centre focusing on gene therapy and stem cell research. In state-of-the-art facilities, researchers at REMEDI work together to combine the technologies of gene therapy and adult stem cell therapy with the aim of regeneration and repair of tissues. The unique feature of the research carried out at REMEDI is the novel integration of both therapies in a complementary research and development programme.

REMEDI researchers have established expertise in gene therapy, stem cell biology, biomaterial science, immunology and medical devise technologies, all essential elements of minimally invasive approaches to regenerative medicine. Research programmes are in place to develop novel therapies for cardiovascular, arthritis/orthopaedic and neural applications aspect of its research programmes towards the clinic.

Basic research strands at REMEDI include: Stem Cell Science, Gene Therapy, Immunology, Developmental/Basic Biology, Proteomics, Biomaterials for Novel Biotherapeutics, Investigation of blunt renal trauma.

Entry requirements

For international students

PhD candidates should normally have a high honours standard in a relevant academic discipline at primary degree level or equivalent together with the support of an academic staff member who is approved by the College to supervise the research in terms of its nature and scope.

Additional entry requirements

Candidates may be required to submit a research proposal for consideration by the School as part of their application.

English Language Requirements

IELTS: 6.5 overall no less than 6.5 in any one component; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88 overall (20 Listening, 20 Speaking, 24 Writing, 19 Reading); Pearson PTE: 61 overall, no less than 61 in any one component.
