What will I learn?

A Common Entry course is a popular choice for students who have an interest in a discipline but are unsure of what career path they would like to follow. Common Entry courses allow students to study a broad range of subjects initially and then choose their preferred specialist area. This allows students more time to discover what interests them most.

Course Structure

The first year of this course provides students with a foundation in science, and subjects are common for all students. After Year 1, students separate into their chosen specialist area from the following:

BSc (Honours) Biosciences with Biopharmaceuticals SE500
BSc (Honours) Brewing & Distilling SE500
BSc (Honours) Pharmaceutics and Drug Formulation SE500

The course offers a blend of academic and practical skill development and includes a period of industrial work placement.

Biosciences with Biopharmaceuticals

This option equips students with a theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills and competencies demanded by the biopharmaceutical science and biotechnology industries.

Brewing and Distilling

This option will equip graduates with the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies in brewing and distilling and enable them to make a contribution to this recognised growth industry.

Pharmaceutics and Drug Formulation

This option offers a solid foundation in chemistry and analytical science that will allow graduates to make a significant contribution to the pharmaceutical industry.

Entry requirements

For international students

Year 1 entry:

Candidates for year 1 entry to our Bachelor Degree programmes must hold a high school completion certificate that comes in at level 5 on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications. All candidates must have completed 12 years of full-time education prior to applying for entry to SETU Carlow. All subjects on the High School Completion Certificate must be successfully passed, with good grades.

Advanced Entry:

SETU Carlow welcomes applications from students who have completed some studies at higher level at other institutions and who wish to transfer onto a Bachelor degree programme at SETU Carlow.

English Language Requirements:

IELTS: 5.5 IELTS(minimum of 5 IELTS in each component)

TOEFL Internet Based test (iBT): 70 (min score of 15 in each component)

TOEFL – Computer Based Test: 196 (min score of 15 in each component)
