What will I learn?

Programme Outcomes

This pre-entry career MSc is designed to take the student with excellent basic scientific skills and facilitate them to develop a broad knowledge of clinical biochemistry and how it is integral to the patient’s diagnosis, management and outcome.

This one-year, full-time MSc Programme equips graduates with

  • Clinical biochemistry knowledge including technical and scientific skills aimed at developing clinical judgement. Providing them with a comprehensive overview of biochemical pathways and their relevance in health and disease states;
  • Quality and accreditation of the clinical biochemistry diagnostic service; including experience of clinical translational research and development.
  • Applied knowledge and understanding of diagnosis and management of patients from a clinical and scientific perspective;
  • Techniques utilised in the practice of diagnostic clinical biochemistry, endocrinology and toxicology;
  • Understanding of clinical areas and interpretation of results profiles in common and complex disease categories;
  • Critical results reporting.

Entry requirements

For international students

A small number of applicants with a first class honours will be shortlisted for interview.

Preference will be given to those with particular relevance to the speciality of clinical biochemistry. For example a clinical project performed in final year of degree. Applicants who possess a science related Masters of a relevant PhD are eligible to apply.

IELTS: An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by Princeton University:

  • A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +.
  • A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (iBT) with a score of at least 20 in each section

Cambridge Examinations

English language examinations administered by the University of Cambridge: 176+ on Cambridge English scale (with no less than 169 in each skill and use of English)

Acceptable Examinations:

  • Proficiency Certificate, Grade C (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2).
  • Advanced Certificate, Grade C (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2)
  • First Certificate, Grade A (i.e. CEFR Level C1)

Pearson English Language Text: Minimum of 63 and at least 59 for each item in the Communicative Skills section.
