What will I learn?

This course provides the essential theoretical, clinical and research training for those wishing to work as a Counselling Psychologist.

Take a humanistic approach to reducing psychological distress and promoting the wellbeing of children, adolescents, adults, couples, families and other groups. As a graduate of this course you will be eligible to apply for registration as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This course is approved by the HCPC and accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Teaching and learning

The course aims to be inclusive and accessible, and recognises that training to be a counselling psychologist is an active, constructive and contextual process. The course is structured so that your knowledge and skills continually develop at each level. We assume prior knowledge of undergraduate psychology, but not counselling. You will be supported across the 3 years by a course leader, module leaders, lecturers, research supervisors, and placement supervisors, in addition to an individual course tutor.

Entry requirements

For international students

Students need to have a 2:1 degree from a BPS accredited undergraduate Psychology course. If your degree is in an unrelated subject but you can provide evidence of relevant professional experience. In addition to the above you will need to have: 2 references and a personal statement (maximum 1,000 words) along with your application; The Graduate Basis for Chartership with the BPS; Satisfactory DBS enhanced disclosure; A commitment to undertake personal therapy and clinical supervision. If English is not your first language you will need to show that you have English Language competence at IELTS level 6.0 (with no skill below 5.5) or equivalent. TOEFL iBT (home edition also accepted): Overall score of 75 (Listening 17, Reading 18, Speaking 20, Writing 20), other forms of TOEFL are not acceptable.
