What will I learn?

This course prepares practitioners to work in defined areas of community public health practice, for registration as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) - School Nurse.

  • Specialist Community Public Health Nurses lead and deliver public health services for children, young people and families in the community.
  • Develop the skills to assess the health needs of individuals, families, and communities within diverse and changing contexts, to enhance health and well-being.
  • You’ll be exposed to the breadth and depth of public health working and demonstrate your ability to participate safely in the practice of School Nursing.
  • The course is offered in partnership with 0-19 years Public Health service providers, with theory learning at BU and practice learning supported by a practice supervisor and practice assessors.
  • There is also a health visiting pathway available.

Course accreditations

This course is approved by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) which means upon successful completion of the course you will have achieved the NMC ‘Standards of Proficiency for Specialist Community Public Health Nurses’ (2022) in the field of School Nursing and can then register your Specialist Community Public Health Nurse award with the NMC. This should be registered within five years of completion of the programme.

Entry requirements

For international students

A Bachelors Honours degree with 2:2 or equivalent in any subject or equivalent. If English is not your first language you'll need IELTS 7.0 (Academic) with a minimum of 7.0 in listening and reading, with a minimum of 6.5 in writing and speaking, or Occupational English Test (OET)1 grade B in listening and reading and writing and speaking. TOEFL: 94-101.
