What will I learn?

Program Information

The fire science program is committed to providing an integral link between formal education and the emergency services through essential training in life safety, protection of property and environmental conservation, benefiting the students and the communities they serve. Butler’s Fire Science Program is located at 2610 W 6th Street in El Dorado. Butler’s Fire Science Program offers a large selection of courses in Butler and Sedgwick County. Instructors are current and retired fire service personnel ranging from Firefighters to Fire Chiefs. Students can satisfy their cooperative education requirements by serving as a Volunteer Firefighter at those locations.

You may not immediately associate firefighting with science, but the fact is, there is a great deal of science behind the techniques employed to control and extinguish fires. It’s also a fact that modern life is introducing a lot new technologies, chemicals and industrial processes that are increasing the potential for fires. As automated as so many of our processes are these days, there’s still no substitute for the personal courage, skill and commitment that firefighters possess. Their service will always be an irreplaceable assets to our communities.

Of course, there’s no better way to learn to fight fires than from active professionals on the job today. When you pursue an Associate degree or a one-year certificate at Butler, that’s exactly who will be teaching you. Our faculty are experienced local and regional firefighters. Their real-world experience becomes yours as you train with them in Wichita area fire stations.

You’ll learn a wide range of skills from fire suppression to emergency rescue to how to handle hazardous materials. You’ll operate the equipment, acquire basic EMT skills and, yes, you’ll even study the chemistry involved in the way a fire behaves. It’s all in a few semesters’ work on your way to becoming that special breed of scientist who knows how to run into a burning building.
