Why Study Chemistry at Northwest

At Northwest, chemistry students gain practical laboratory experience and foundational knowledge in organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, physical chemistry and analytical chemistry. Students can choose a chemistry degree that is certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) or emphasize in general chemistry, biochemistry.

Pick your path

General Chemistry - B.A. or B.S.

The general chemistry major allows students to select electives that suit their individual interests. Many students choose to double major in chemistry and another area, such as geology, agronomy or biology.

Biochemistry - B.S.

The biochemistry emphasis focuses on compounds in living systems including their composition, properties and chemical reactions, to understand the structure and function of biological systems. The cross-discipline curriculum in biology and chemistry trains students to be competitive in the rapidly expanding biotechnology field.

Chemistry - B.S. - ACS Certified

The ACS-certified major in chemistry provides students with deep exposure to the many aspects of chemistry. Students are intellectually challenged and gain an appreciation for how chemistry impacts their daily lives. This nationally recognized degree is designed to prepare students for a research career.

Entry requirements

For international students

Freshman admission for international students is evaluated on an individual basis. Admission is offered to students who possess academic qualifications equivalent to those required for domestic first-time freshmen. Consideration is given to the courses taken and grades received in secondary school, as well as to results of school leaving examinations and certificates.

A minimum high school grade point average of 2.00 or "C" average and;

A college-preparatory curriculum in secondary school, including courses in mathematics, science, language and social studies.
