USA

What will I learn?

The University offers a bachelor of science (B.S.) in Textiles, Apparel, and Merchandising (TAM).

The TAM Program provides students with dynamic academic options that build the necessary foundation for a wide variety of careers in the creation and distribution of textile and apparel products, specific to design, product development, and merchandising. The program is grounded in the most recent apparel-industry analysis research.

Students in the TAM Program are encouraged to enroll in one of the following minors (requires a minimum of 18 credit hours).

Design Minor: The intention of design minor is to develop skills in product development, technical design, and/or apparel design of those individuals majoring in TAM. The skills that students will develop include color, design and trend analysis, pattern making, textile creations (weaving and surface design), and draping. Students are required to participate in a Capstone Design Collection course with a portfolio requirement as well as plan and produce the annual student fashion showcase.

Merchandising Minor: The merchandising minor is designed for TAM majors. A minor in merchandising provides students with the necessary skills for careers in supply chain of the apparel industry including retail management, buying, and/or planning. Courses focus on the theoretical development and practical skills specific to product forecasting; merchandise buying, planning, and distribution; sourcing strategies; and retail operation and management. Students are required to participate in a Capstone in Merchandising and Retailing Applications course that requires developing a business plan for a fashion-related business to be entered into industry-related student competitions. Students work with design minor students in the marketing and development of the annual student fashion showcase.

To supplement coursework, students are required to participate in internship opportunities. Students are also encouraged to attend industry conferences, engage in various types of field excursions, and share in networking and career development events with both peers and industry professionals.

The Fashion Merchandising and Association (FMA) is a student member organization that provides professional growth opportunities by arranging speaking engagements with individuals in the fashion, textile, and apparel industry, sponsoring professional activities and offering networking possibilities. FMA enables students to meet peers with similar interest, socialize with faculty in an informal setting, and provide opportunities for leadership, problem solving, and management skills, and general resume development.

Other opportunities include the University's Honors Program and study abroad programs, which range from summer programs to a single semester or a full academic year in over 56 countries.
