Focusing on fostering an environment that respects the potential of Ceramic’s rich traditions while also integrating and exploring its new potentials, we are a community of learners exploring innovation.
MICA's Ceramics major provides a highly individualized course of study and fosters the development of a student’s personal voice. The curriculum supports technical skills within a framework of innovation and interdisciplinary thinking, and involves students in traditions and contemporary trends in the medium, with an active engagement in critical inquiry.
MICA's Ceramics community is strong. We are believers in building artistic confidence and support our students' application of that confidence in their creative process in order to create meaningful work. Ceramics core requirements help build competence, moving from structured learning to increasing levels of independent research and self-direction.
Students are actively engaged in critical inquiry. Immersed in this rich intellectual environment, students understand themselves within the landscape of contemporary art and culture, and through the study and research of ceramics, they learn and explore its incredibly varied role in fine and applied arts, industry, and design.
Elective choices in sculptural studies, as well as the generous number of open studio electives in the major, provide opportunities for interdisciplinary work and the healthy exchange of ideas among all areas of the College.
