What will I learn?

Intervention specialists work with children who have mild to moderate or moderate to intensive disabilities, including learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities, emotional disturbances, hearing or visual impairments, autism and other health-impaired and multiple disabilities.

The College of Education offers three licensure options in special education:

Early Childhood Intervention Specialist (Age 3-Grade 3)

Mild to Moderate Intervention Specialist (K-12)

Moderate to Intensive Intervention Specialist (K-12)

Core curriculum prepares you to work effectively with pupils who experience physical, learning and/or emotional differences.

Degrees and Preparation

Earning the Intervention Specialist (K-12); ECIS (Age 3-Grade 3) degree prepares you to work with children who have mild to moderate or moderate to intensive disabilities, including:

learning disabilities

cognitive disabilities

emotional disturbances

hearing or visual impairments

autism

health-impaired and/or multiple disabilities

Career Outlook

The federal government predicts job opportunities are growing for intervention specialists as more and more special education students need services.

Entry requirements

For international students

New Freshman

You are a high school student or have completed high school or equivalent and have never enrolled in a college/university. SAT or ACT is not required for standard admission or admission scholarship consideration for all types of applicants. An official SAT or ACT score is required to be considered for direct admission into your intended major.

All undergraduate international applicants must provide proof of English proficiency by meeting the minimum score from one of the following acceptable tests. This requirement can be waived if you meet certain criteria.

Minimum requirements for English proficiency:

IELTS: 6.0

SAT (Evidence-based reading & writing) test taken after March, 2016: 500

ACT English: 18

Duolingo English Test (DET): 95

CAE (Cambridge English: Advanced): 169

PTE: 48

Application deadlines: Fall: May 1; Spring: October 1 and Summer I, II, III: March 1
