The Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) is available for experienced teachers who already hold a teaching license and a master鈥檚 degree and wish to further broaden their knowledge of mathematics education. Students select from a variety of course offerings in mathematics education that are based on current research and 鈥渂est practices鈥� pedagogies. Courses that assist students in becoming leaders, conducting research in classrooms, and developing curriculum are available. Students may also select to take more mathematics in order to deepen and extend their content knowledge. The program is tailored to meet students鈥� needs and will vary depending upon each individual鈥檚 background. This certificate program can be used to satisfy professional licensure requirements.

SED ME 558 Mathematics Curriculum: Programs, Issues, and Trends (4 cr)

SED ME 589 Designing Professional Development Programs in Mathematics Education (4 cr)

SED ME 851 Seminar: Mathematics Education (4 cr)

One research course (4 cr)

Elective Coursework (16 cr)

Students select relevant elective courses for a total of 16 credits in consultation with their academic advisor. For students pursuing a professional licensure, three mathematics and/or mathematics education mathematics courses (12 credits) appropriate to the level taught are required. A sampling of coursework is listed below.

SED RS 699 Research Apprenticeship (in Mathematics Education) (2鈥�4 cr)

Additional Requirements

Comprehensive Examination

CAGS candidates must file a formal application for a comprehensive examination with their faculty advisors. The examination must be completed successfully.
