What will I learn?

PhD students in computational applied mathematics at Rice University gain knowledge in understanding of physical phenomena and in making complex decisions. The experience involves intensive course study in small classes, close interaction with professors and immediate opportunities to participate in seminars and to engage in research projects.

Upon completing the PhD degree in the field of Computational Applied Mathematics and Operations Research, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a solid foundation in graduate-level computational and applied mathematics, across multiple sub-fields.
  • Propose and conduct original research in the field of computational and applied mathematics.
  • Communicate computational and mathematical results and their consequences professionally and effectively in both written and oral formats.

Students pursuing the PhD degree in the field of Computational Applied Mathematics and Operations Research must:

  • Complete a course of study approved by the department to establish a broad foundation in applied mathematics.
  • Perform satisfactorily on qualifying examinations and reviews.
  • Produce an original thesis acceptable to the department.
  • Perform satisfactorily on a final public oral examination on the thesis.

Entry requirements

For international students

Students can apply directly from a bachelor’s program (three-year bachelor’s degrees are accepted). In general, applicants should have at least a 3.0 (B) grade point average, or the equivalent, in their undergraduate work.

Applicants who are foreign nationals and those whose native language is not English must provide evidence of English proficiency. The following language proficiency tests are accepted by Rice graduate programs and will be used to assess English language proficiency:

The TOEFL IBT or IBT Home Edition. A minimum score of 90 is required
IELTS Indicator. A minimum score of 7 is required.
Duolingo. A minimum score of 115 is required.

Application Deadline: December 15 - Late applications will be accepted until January 15.
