The Department of Government and Politics offers you the opportunity to complete a Certificate in International Law and Diplomacy. This certificate can be obtained independently or as a complement to the master’s degree. Students who have already completed their M.A. degree in the department may continue to study for the Certificate. Please note that no federal aid is available to students who pursue the certificate independently from the M.A. degree.
Courses
The certificate requires students to successfully complete 18 credits in International Relations and Comparative Politics courses. At least six credits must be taken from the following three-credit International Law and Diplomacy courses:
GOV 271 Theory and Practice of Diplomacy
GOV 341 International Law: Law of Peace
GOV 342 International Human Rights Law
GOV 343 International Law: Law of International Transactions
GOV 344 International Law: Law of War and Neutrality

For admission to graduate studies in the department, students are expected to have an undergraduate preparation of at least 18 credits in government and politics/political science or equivalent and a 3.0 GPA. Any deficiency in preparation may require supplementary course work for admission in the form of suitable graduate courses, as determined by the department.
Language Requirements
Applicants whose native language is not English and who have not attended a postsecondary institution in which English is the language of instruction must provide TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores for admission.
Applicants who have taken the SAT can have the TOEFL/IELTS requirement waived
Applicants who have attended an American high school abroad or an American university can have the TOEFL/IELTS requirement waived

International students are encouraged to submit their application for admission and all required credentials by May 1 for fall semester admission and November 1 for spring semester admission.
