What will I learn?

Within the area of performance, students may select an instrumental (string, wind, brass, percussion, or keyboard) emphasis. This degree is designed to prepare individuals for professional advancement or for entry into further study at the doctoral level.

Awards for full-time graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Recipients of these positions will take active leadership roles in the department's ensembles, teaching and accompanying private lessons and/or serving as an assistant to the ensemble director.

About Master's Degree

The favorable student/teacher ratio in the Pittsburg State graduate program ensures that students will work with specialists in all of the standard areas of instrumental performance. As active performers themselves, this faculty brings a wealth of insight to the practice of advanced musical instruction and coaching. Graduate students in this program will enjoy numerous opportunities for performance experience in solo and chamber contexts, as well as in a great variety of large ensembles. They will also further develop their skills in the areas of research and scholarship.

The facilities at Pittsburg State include superb performance venues, including the critically-acclaimed Bicknell Family Center for the Arts and the Sharon Kay Dean Recital Hall. Students have access to excellent instrumental resources across the university, including professional-level percussion instruments, outstanding grand pianos, harpsichords, and the Fisk Opus 106 organ.

This degree serves instrumentalists whose future career paths may lead to collegiate-level teaching, private studio instruction, membership in professional ensembles, or other areas of solo or collaborative performance.

Entry requirements

Admission requires a bachelor's degree with a grade-point average of at least a 2.7 on a 4.0 scale.

The minimum score levels required for various degree programs at Pittsburg State University range from:
