The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication master’s program is a 32-credit course of study culminating in a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in journalism and mass communication. Two tracks are available: one for students who desire specialized study in communication theory and research and one for students who wish to develop or strengthen their professional and strategic communication skills.

Learning Goals that students in this program are expected to meet include:
To develop an understanding of the central issues and current research important to the field of journalism and communication.
To be familiar with the breadth and depth of the journalism and communication profession.
To be able to communicate acquired knowledge in the field.
To be aware of ethical issues that pertains to the field of journalism and communication.
To develop the ability to design and present an independent and meaningful research project.

Iowa State requires a bachelor’s or higher degree from a regionally-accredited college or university prior to beginning graduate studies.
International degrees must be comparable to a US bachelor’s degree or higher from a college or university regionally accredited/recognized by the Ministry of Education in that country.
A minimum cumulative grade point average equivalent to at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (B grade) is required for admission.
The minimum scores accepted by the Graduate College are:
Internet Based TOEFL (iBT): 88

IELTS: 6.5
Pearson Test of English (PTE): 59
Duo Lingo English Test: 105
Although the Greenlee School reviews applications as they arrive, applications must be received by Jan. 15 (for those planning to begin graduate work in August or the fall semester) and by the middle of October (for those planning to begin graduate work in January or the spring semester) for full consideration.
Application Deadlines: Rolling examination of applications, but international students who wish to be considered for assistantships should submit applications by Feb 15.
