What will I learn?

The mission of the UNLV MS in Nutrition Sciences is to provide program graduates with the skills and knowledge to be comfortable and competent nutrition and dietetics professionals capable of providing excellent nutrition and dietetic services in numerous community, food service, management, and clinical settings. The program will provide an evidence-based curriculum with a translation to clinical/professional practice.

Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics Track

This Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics Subplan requires that prospective students earn and submit a Verification Statement from an ACEND-accredited DPD. Prospective students must also apply separately and be accepted into the UNLV Dietetic Internship Supervised Practice Program to be eligible for this subplan. Please contact the graduate coordinator for further clarification and deadlines with this process. Students are admitted to this subplan on a competitive basis. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Learning Outcomes

Learning activities will:

Prepare students for professional practice with patients/clients with various conditions and in various settings.

Prepare students to implement the Nutrition Care Process with various populations and diverse cultures.

Use a variety of educational approaches (such as professional shadowing, role- playing, simulations, hands-on practice, problem-based learning, classroom and web-based instruction, laboratory experiences).

Provide opportunities for students to learn professional and ethical behaviors and expectations including ways to contribute to the nutrition and dietetics profession such as serving as future preceptors and mentors.

Area 1: Scientific and Evidence Base of Practice: Integration of scientific information and research into practice

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

SLO 1.1: Demonstrate how to locate, interpret, evaluate, and use professional scientific literature to make ethical, evidence-based practice decisions.

SLO 1.2: Use current information technologies to locate and apply evidence-based guidelines and protocols.

SLO 1.3: Analyze data for assessment and evaluate data to be used in decision-making.

SLO 1.4: Apply critical thinking skills.

SLO 1.5: Demonstrate understanding of human physiology.

SLO 1.6: Demonstrate understanding of nutrient metabolism.

SLO 1.7: Demonstrate an understanding of research methods.

SLO 1.8. Demonstrate an understanding of research statistics.

Career Possibilities

This program is designed to meet the requirements of students wishing to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and Licensed Dietitian in Nevada. In order to become an RDN students must:

Complete the Didactic Program in Nutrition a Dietetics (DPND) requirements.

Apply for, become accepted into, and complete an ACEND-Accredited Dietetic Internship.

Pass the National Registration Examination for Dietitians.

This MS in Nutrition Sciences fulfills one of these steps. This degree alone, does not satisfy the requirement to become an RDN.

Entry requirements

For international students

All applicants must have a minimum overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.75 (A=4.0), or 3.00 (A=4.0) in the last two years. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is optional but may be used by the student toward admission (as evidence of quantitative abilities, and/or evidence of verbal abilities). Applicants to the Thesis Subplan are encouraged to provide the GRE scores for admission.

Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics Subplan applicants must also have 2.75 minimum GPA in the required sciences courses and DPND courses, separate from the total GPA.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Minimum score: 6.5

Duolingo English Test (DET): Minimum score: 105

Michigan Test of English Language Placement (MTELP): Minimum score: 85

Pearson Test of English (PTE): Minimum score: 65
