The university was established in 1964, with two campuses to explore. The original is in Hamilton city, while the other opened in Tauranga in 2019. Both campuses form part of the heart of New Zealand’s export focused economy.

The are offered for the university’s students, recent graduates as well as alumni with tools and support for career development.
This service helps students with developing their CV and cover letters, career planning, interview skills, volunteering, enhancing their employability skills, and also refining the students’ personal brand. The services can connect students with employers through employer campus visits, career fairs, and also promotion of graduate opportunities.
An online system, allows students to manage their own career development. Students can set up personal profiles, book-in for tutorials and workshops, create appointments with career advisors, as well as search and apply for volunteer and graduate opportunities.
Waikato’s work integrated programmes create a link between academic learning and the practical applications of learning in the workplace. Each year students have the opportunity to take part in over 2,000 industry placements and internships. Enabling students to gain essential professional skills in the workplace and build key relationships with future employers.
Researchers at the University’s School of Engineering have developed a set to revitalise New Zealand’s asparagus industry. Now they have developed an designed to automate kiwifruit harvesting and open up picking jobs to a wider range of people.
Researchers are also working with scientists and engineers to develop a robotic vehicle designed to thin apple orchards, pick blueberries or prune vineyards.
That work is part of a USD 17 million, five-year project, funded by the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, and managed by Auckland University, helping develop robots and artificial intelligence technologies for New Zealand’s horticulture and viticulture industries.
The project, , was started in 2018 and will soon see field trials of the new technology.

The University of Waikato was established in 2022 to support international students to progress from undergraduate to postgraduate level study for the first time at the University of Waikato. No application is required for this Bursary.
The University of Waikato International Excellence contributes up to NZD 15,000 towards tuition fees for international students enrolling in undergraduate or postgraduate-taught studies.
Applicants must be recipients of either a conditional or unconditional offer of place from the university. Applications for the International Excellence Scholarship may be submitted at any time.
For international students completing Year 13 (or equivalent) at a high school/ learning institution in 2024 and intending to enrol full-time in an undergraduate degree at the University of Waikato in A Trimester 2025.
There are several ways students can to degree study at the University of Waikato. The teaches in the English language and requires all students to demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English. The university has an extensive list of entry requirements based on a large number of qualifications.
Academic entry requirements are dependent on which country the international student’s previous study was completed in and each application is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Students will need to meet the English language and academic requirements. Generally, an undergraduate degree in a similar area of study is required. Requirements are identified on the qualification pages of the university website.
