Other eligibility requirements

  • First Class Academic Standing equivalent to a GPA of 3.5 or greater over the student's current graduate program graded coursework at University of Arizona
  • Must be a continuing in, or have been recommended for admission to, a doctoral degree program
  • For continuing PhD students this award can be offered up to and including the sixth year of a doctoral program
  • For continuing PhD students funding for a seventh year will only be considered if a compelling explanation [illness, or parental leave, or personal catastrophe] outlined in a letter of support from the department is provided
  • Applicants must have completed no more than 48 months in the doctoral program as of December 31, 2019
  • Applicants must have completed at least one year of graduate work [master's or doctoral level] before start of tenure
  • Applicants should anticipate being registered in their doctoral program for at least 18 months [as of May 2020] as the award is offered for two years
  • All fields are eligible for funding
  • Qualifying students, students on academic probation, or students registered in cost-recovery programs are not eligible
  • Offered to outstanding students
  • Selection based on the applicant's likelihood to contribute to the advancement of learning or to win distinction in their profession
  • Killam's scholars should not be one-sided, and their intellect should be complemented by a sound character
  • Tenure of award may begin on May 1 or September 1
  • The award is offered for two years, subject to renewal in year two of the award (renewals must meet eligibility requirements and submit proper documentation
  • If the student is registered as part-time at the time of application they may apply; however, they must register full-time to hold the award
