This scholarship is open to applicants intending to commence study on a distance learning programme at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in 2025-26. The recipients will be expected to finish their respective programme within five years of registration. 

Eligible programmes are any of the 6 distance learning Master’s degrees on our Distance Learning page. Applicants intending to study PG Certificate and PG Diploma programmes are not eligible for this scholarship.  

You will not be eligible for the First Generation scholarship if you already have a master’s degree, or a qualification that’s equivalent, such as an integrated master’s degree, or a qualification that’s higher than a master’s degree, such as a PhD.

To be eligible for these scholarships, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

meet minimum English language requirements;
hold an offer of admission for 2025-26 for one of LSHTM’s 6 distance learning MSc programmes of study;
the first in their family to enter higher education, meaning where neither of the applicant’s mother or father (biological, adoptive or foster) or guardian(s) had graduated with a university degree (that is, a BA or BSc qualification or higher) before the applicant was aged 18.

The selection panel will also give preference to those applicants who are in the categories below: 

Black ethnicity
Care experienced
Care giver
Disabled
Estranged from family
Refugee or asylum seeker
