What will I learn?

This course offers an accelerated path to advancing your career, enabling you to graduate with a Bachelor of Natural Environments and Conservation and Master of Protected Area Conservation in just 4 years.

During the initial two years of the Bachelor of Natural Environments and Conservation degree, you'll develop critical thinking skills, integrative knowledge, and practical field expertise necessary for addressing conservation and environmental management challenges. In your third year, you'll commence your Master of Protected Area Conservation studies, specifically designed to equip you with professional expertise tailored to the management of the global estate of protected areas.

You'll apply these acquired skills in governance, planning, and management to address complex conservation problems across landscapes and within protected areas. Collectively, the combined Bachelor of Natural Environments and Conservation and Master of Protected Area Conservation provides a comprehensive foundation in hard science, field techniques, and management skills essential for roles in conservation and environmental management.

Taught by experts in environmental science, ecology, and conservation biology, you'll benefit from their guidance and firsthand experiences. Additionally, you will have access to state-of-the-art technology and engage in field trips, practical exercises, and research projects, facilitating the application of theoretical knowledge into practical scenarios.

Given Tasmania's unique natural landscape, with half the state designated as reserves and approximately half of these being world heritage sites, it serves as an ideal location for studying protected area governance and management. Some of the world's wildest and most outstanding natural
environments are within an hour of both the Launceston and Hobart campuses. We can access marine, coastal, heathland, wetland, grassland, woodland, dry eucalypt, wet eucalypt, and rainforest environments, as well as urban nature. This immersive experience will deepen your understanding of environmental conservation and its implications for future generations. You will explore the intricate relationships between humans and the environment, learning to balance economic, social, and environmental factors when making decisions regarding land management and conservation.

Career outcomes

After graduation, you'll have the skills to gain employment in a various areas including environmental advocacy, park management and planning, natural environment interpretation, environmental assessment, natural environmental research, environmental management, natural resource management, policy development, and business enterprises, particularly those associated with natural area tourism.

This course has been designed to meet international competencies for protected area planners specified by the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas, with a particular focus on middle and senior governance and management roles. This means you will graduate with the full range of required skills for protected area planners and managers in senior roles.

Entry requirements

For international students

Admission to undergraduate courses at the University of Tasmania requires the completion of qualifications equivalent to a 12th year of education in Australia.
