What will I learn?

Our Bachelor of Visual Arts program has been reimagined in response to the evolving contemporary art landscape, with a focus on collaboration and self-initiated creative practice. We foster a cohesive creative community that will support you during your degree and after you graduate.

Courses in contemporary studio art practice are contextualised through a comprehensive historical and theoretical foundation. You will develop skills in:

• painting

• drawing

• ceramics

• sculpture and installation

• printmaking

• media technologies.

You will also gain skills in virtual and physical exhibition planning and management through our online and campus galleries.

Our Bachelor of Visual Arts is developed in consultation with national associations, local industry, and community and industry leaders, to provide students with real-world, practical learning opportunities and skills.

Learn from internationally renowned practicing artists including Jill Orr, guest-speakers, and artists in residence while you immerse yourself in creative arts projects with local arts and community organisations. Our calendar is aligned with events such as the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, Ballarat Heritage Festival and we collaborate with regional organisations such as the Art Gallery of Ballarat, TarraWarra Museum of Art, Latrobe Regional Gallery, and Gippsland Art Gallery.

Our internship program will prepare you for a professional career in the arts. Placements are available in industry-leading art galleries and arts organisations, schools, and community organisations. Students also participate in industry-based projects through our relationships with the museums and art galleries.

These opportunities under the co-operative learning model develop transferable skills for various roles in the arts industry that are applicable to other fields. Critical thinking, leadership, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship are all embedded in individual courses tailored to current and emerging industry trends.

Students can choose from a range of electives across disciplines including:

• Arts Writing

• Indigenous Studies

• Entrepreneurship

• Behavioural Studies

• Media and Screen Studies

• Education and Web Project Development.

Federation University will ensure our Bachelor of Visual Arts graduates are not only ready to step into their future careers with confidence and experience but are creatively motivated individuals with the skills to succeed.

Many of our graduates, including David Noonan, Kim Anderson and Archibald Prize winner Marcus Wills, enjoy successful careers as internationally renowned artists, curators, gallery directors and arts administrators.
