What will I learn?

Located within the Department of Economics, the world-renowned Centre for Actuarial Studies is one of the seven teaching units that are fully accredited by the Actuaries Institute with leading researchers in actuarial studies and financial mathematics. It has been designated a Centre of Actuarial Excellence (CAE) by the US Society of Actuaries (SOA).

Graduate Research candidates form an integral part of the Centre and are strongly encouraged to participate in its research and teaching activities. The working environment for graduate research students is first class, with excellent library and computing facilities.

The Doctoral Program in Actuarial Studies is a 3-year thesis-only course offered by the Centre for Actuarial Studies. The Centre's outstanding actuarial programs are officially recognised by the Society of Actuaries, which has designated it a Centre of Actuarial Excellence (CAE). The Centre's staff expertise spans insurance, superannuation, financial mathematics, risk theory and related fields. PhD supervision is available in a wide range of topics, including: Investment models; Survival analysis; Derivative pricing; Applied probability; Mortality modelling; Longevity risk; Climate change risk

Entry requirements

For international students

In order to be considered for entry, you must have completed:

a four-year bachelor degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and have achieved a minimum weighted average of 75% in the final year subjects or (University of Melbourne) equivalent, or
a masters degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and achieved a minimum weighted average of 75% or (University of Melbourne) equivalent, or
a qualification and professional experience considered to be equivalent.

English language requirements:

IELTS (academic English Only): Overall 7.0 (with written 7.0 and no band less than 6.0)
TOEFL Internet-based test: 94 + ; Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13;
Pearson Test of English Academic: 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50
Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill
