In the Bachelor of Music in Jazz and Contemporary Popular Music, you gain the skills, insights, credentials and connections you need to pursue a career as a professional musician, performer, creator and leader in the music industry.

This hands-on experience is enhanced by studies in performance, theory, composition, musicology, career management, recording and production, digital audio technology, and research.

You have the option to exit the program with a diploma after the completion of the first two years in any route.

DIPLOMA EXIT

You may choose to exit the Bachelor of Music with a diploma after successful completion of the first two years.

All students apply for admission to the four-year degree and choose a major route. Music technology and production is an additional major available for the diploma exit.

In order to claim a diploma, you must submit an application to graduate. If you obtain the diploma, and you are otherwise eligible to do so, you may continue with the degree. You are not required to exit the program once you earn your diploma; however, if you discontinue your studies for 12 months, you must re-apply for admission.

Entry requirements

For international students

Regular admission

Applicants must have a minimum overall average of 65 percent, with no course grade lower than 50 percent, in the following high school courses:

ELA 30-1 or 75% in ELA 30-2

Four subjects from Group A, B, C or D courses

Mature admission

Applicants must be 20 years of age or older and have been out of full-time high school at least one year by the beginning of the intake term. Applicant must have the following:

ELA 30-1 with a minimum grade of 65 percent (or equivalent)

OR

Six credits of university-level English with a minimum grade of C-

Applicants with nine or more post-secondary credits must also present a minimum admission grade point average (AGPA) of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Previous post-secondary

Applicants must have successfully completed one of the following from a recognized institution:

A minimum of 24 university-level credits with a minimum admission grade point average (AGPA) of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale and must have completed the required core courses listed under the regular admission category.

OR

A university music diploma program or equivalent.

IELTS–Academic: Minimum overall band score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 5.5 in each band.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (Internet-Based Test (iBT)): Minimum total score of 86 and a minimum score of 21 in each section.

Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): Minimum overall band score of 70 and a minimum score of 60 in each band.

PTE – Academic: Minimum overall score of 59 and a minimum score of 56 in each band.

Cambridge English: Advanced/Proficiency: Minimum overall score of 180 and a minimum score of 165 in each skill.

Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): Minimum overall score of 85 and a minimum score of 80 in GCVR.
