What will I learn?

Assess communication disorders, carry out treatment plans, make a difference for clients with a speech or communication disorder.

As a speech language pathologist assistant, you can help those with communication disorders by carrying out treatment plans, observing and reporting patients’ responses, and performing administrative and support activities.

The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) major of the Therapist Assistant diploma provides the theoretical knowledge, skill development and practical experience required to work as a speech language pathologist assistant.

When you graduate, you work with children with communication disorders, doing assessments and supporting the implementation of treatment.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants must have a minimum overall average of 65 percent, with no course grade lower than 50 percent, in the following high school courses:

ELA 30-1 or ELA 30-2
Four subjects from Group A, B, C or D

Applicants must be 20 years of age or older and have been out of full-time high school at least one year by the beginning of the intake term. Applicants must have a minimum overall average of 65 percent, with no course grade lower than 50 percent, in the following high school courses:

One subject from Group A, B or C

A minimum of 18 post-secondary credits with a minimum admission grade point average (AGPA) of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale

English language proficiency tests

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Minimum overall band score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 5.5 in each band; Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Minimum total score of 86 and a minimum score of 21 in each section; Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): Minimum overall band score of 70 and a minimum score of 60 in each band; Pearson Test of English (PTE): Minimum overall score of 59 and a minimum score of 56 in each band; Cambridge English Language Assessment: Minimum overall score of 180 and a minimum score of 165 in each skill.
