The Department of Medicine offers the degrees of MSc. The Department offers a specialization in Translational Medicine (MSc only) as well as a general program in Medicine, either as part of a coordinated program of training leading to the fulfillment of requirements for postgraduate training in the medical specialties, or as a separate program for those proceeding from a BSc or equivalent degree.
Research may be carried out in the basic sciences, epidemiology, public health sciences, or clinical sciences and may be either theoretical or applied in nature.
The Department of Medicine maintains a compilation of applicable guidelines and regulations available on the Department website.
Inquiries should be directed to either the Graduate Program Advisor or the Graduate Coordinator of the Department of Medicine.
Students are required to complete a minimum of ?9 of graduate level coursework, and a thesis.
Coursework:
Students are expected to complete three out of four of the following required courses:
MED 602 - Translational Research Training Program, Module I
MED 604 - Translational Research Training Program, Module II
MED 606 - Translational Research Training Program, Module III
MED 608 - Translational Research Training Program, Module IV
Thesis:
Registration in 900-level THES.
Students must also complete and successfully defend a thesis.
Ethics Requirement:
As part of the ethics training requirement of 8 hours (see Academic Integrity and Ethics Training Requirement), the Graduate Ethics Training course must be completed.
There is no second language requirement for the MSc.
Length of Program:
The time required to complete the program will vary according to the previous training of the applicant and the nature of the research undertaken. A minimum of 18 months is normally required.
The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MSc program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is four years.

Minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution.
