The MPhil-PhD programme in Mathematics aims to educate and cultivate research students with a broad foundation in mathematics and specialized knowledge in selected concentrations. The research focus in partial differential equations, computational mathematics, financial mathematics, algebra, geometry, topology and related interdisciplinary fields. They are expected to become leading academics and researchers in universities, research institutes, and industries, making an original and substantial contribution to selected fields. An applicant with a master鈥檚 degree should apply for admission to the PhD Stream, while an applicant with a bachelor鈥檚 degree can apply for admission to either MPhil or PhD Stream. Students who satisfy prescribed requirements will receive degree of CUHK.

Applicants for doctoral studies must meet the following requirements:
1. Graduated from a recognized university with a master's degree; or
2. Graduated from a recognized university with a bachelor's degree with a minimum second class honors; or
3. Graduated from a recognized university with a bachelor's degree with a grade of "B" or higher; or
4. Have completed studies at a higher education institution and obtained a vocational qualification equivalent to an honours degree or similar qualification.
Applicants for master's degree programs must meet the following requirements:
1. Graduated from a recognized university with a bachelor's degree with a minimum second class honours; or
2. Graduated from an accredited university with a bachelor's degree with a grade of "B" or higher; or
3. Have completed studies at a higher education institution and obtained a vocational qualification equivalent to an honours degree or similar qualification.
All applicants must meet the English language requirements (one of the following):
1. Obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or completed a degree course with English as the medium of instruction;
2. English language tests :
- TOEFL: 550 (paper-based test)/79 (computer-based test/home test);
- IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (Test Centre/Online);
- GMAT: Band 21 (Verbal) c ;
- GMAT Focus Edition: Band 78 (Verbal);
3. A pass in English in any of the following exams:
- Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (AS Level);
- Hong Kong Higher Level Examination;
- CUHK Matriculation Examination;
- General Certificate of Education Examination (GCE) Advanced Level (A-Level) /Advanced Subsidiary
