What will I learn?

This programme is delivered at the Shannon College campus in Co Clare.

In 2015 Shannon College of Hotel Management became a College of University of Galway. The BBS in International Hotel Management at Shannon College of Hotel Management gives students the unique opportunity to combine professional practical training, language development, extensive business studies theory and hands on work experience in the international hotel industry. This combination of practical learning and theory creates a dynamic, confident graduate who is well equipped to begin their career in business management in the hotel industry or in a host of other industries. Students will gain international experience during their studies, making them highly sought after graduates. This has been reflected in the 100% employment record on graduation day since the college was founded.

Course Outline

Year 1 · Study at Shannon College

Professional, practical training forms an essential part of the Year 1 studies as students rotate between seven professional classes every two/three weeks.

Year 2 · Professional Operative Work Placement

The Year 2 work placement is a 12 month professional operative work placement in leading European hotels to reinforce the training in Year 1 and improve knowledge of industry practice and systems.

Year 3 · Study at Shannon College

In Year 3, students advance from the practical training and the introduction in Year 1 and instead focus on modules improving their industry knowledge, such as Rooms Division Management and Hospitality Law. The language module is continued and more advanced business modules such as Business Finance and Marketing Principles are studied.

Year 4 · Study at Shannon College

Students concentrate on advanced general business modules such as Performance Management & Control and Research Methods. Important strategic subject areas such as Entrepreneurship and Strategic Management prepare students for their future careers in hotel management. In Year 4, students will have the opportunity to choose elective subjects in both semesters. Electives include Culinary Arts, Event Management and Wine Appreciation and many more.

International Foundation Business Programme

‌The International Foundation Business Programme caters specifically for the academic and/or English needs of students who do not meet the academic requirement to directly enter undergraduate degree programmes and/or English requirements for their chosen degree.

Upon completion of this level 6 foundation programme students will have the opportunity to progress onto UG programmes in Shannon College of Hotel Management, University of Galway and other institutions in Ireland and worldwide. A foundation programme is a component part of the entry requirements for many international students who wish to pursue their UG studies in Ireland. Students who choose to complete their foundation programme through an Irish University have the great advantage of studying through English, developing a strong understanding of the Irish culture and adapting to the teaching style used in Irish Institutions. This will ensure they are fully prepared to commence their chosen Degree programme.
