What will I learn?

Communication shapes the world we live in – whether by media professionals, large organisations, or individuals.By studying Media and Communication, you will learn how to analyse and produce communications and media, and how other people understand it within their own social worlds.Explore how media builds community, reinforces norms or drives social change, and how consumption of media affects culture, politics, and behaviour.Individual and group projects on multiple platforms – digital, television, podcasts, and more.Create relationships with professional media guest speakers from industry and benefit from presentations and seminars from guest lecturers from around the world.Media and Communication prepares you for a career in a communication industry or any profession that values communication with people and clients, from the news media to marketing to government.Career pathways could include: communications and public relations, social media and digital marketing, web and app design, journalism.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants must have completed New Zealand University Entrance through NCEA; or Cambridge International Examinations (CIE); or International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) or any other equivalent overseas qualification.

Applicants must also satisfy our English language entry requirements:

  • IELTS (Academic): Academic with an average score of 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  • TOEFL (IBT): Total minimum score of 80, with at least 19 in reading, writing and listening. Please note UC only accepts TOEFL iBT scores from a single test date, not My Best scores.
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English - Academic): PTE with an overall score of 50 and no PTE communicative skills score below 42.
  • CAE or CPE: Minimum score of 169 with at least 162 in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  • CCEL EAP: Level 2 with a minimum C+ grade.
  • Language Cert: B2 Communicator (LRWS) overall with High Pass.

Applications after the deadline date (8 December) will be considered if places are available.
