What will I learn?

Gain expertise in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages by studying at our world-ranked Faculty of Education and Social Work. You will gain a useful foundation in subjects that inform TESOL education, such as psychology, philosophy, sociology and history. You will develop up-to-the-minute knowledge and skills in learning, teaching and assessment. Practical experience is integral to the programme. This programme will be useful for education leaders and policymakers as well as TESOL teachers. You will graduate with excellent skills in teaching interactive TESOL using digital technology. You will also have skills in curriculum development, assessment and planning. You will be able to teach a range of ages, from young learners to adults. (Note: To teach in a New Zealand school, you would need to complete a further Graduate Diploma in Teaching.)

Entry requirements

For students from Hong Kong

Applicant must have secondary school qualification or equivalent; GCE 'A' Levels: CCC (This covers GCE and Singapore-Cambridge GCE Advanced Level subjects from: Edexcel, AQA, OCR, CCEA, WJEC, Cambridge International and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB). Scores are calculated on the best three academic subjects. General Studies cannot be included. Only H2 Level academic subjects are considered for GCE A Level taken in Singapore.)

For international students

Secondary school qualifications

You need to have one of the following:

  • International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum total score of 24.
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level. You must have completed a minimum of three A-Level subjects.

GCE 鈥楢 Level requirements apply to 鈥楢 Level qualifications examined by bodies such as AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC, CCEA and Pearson Education Limited taken outside of New Zealand.

Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). You must have completed a minimum of three A-level subjects.

IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.0 and no bands below 5.5; Internet based TOEFL (iBT): Overall score of 80 and a written score of 21; Paper-based TOEFL: Overall score of 60 and a writing score of 21; Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE): Overall score of 169 and no bands below 162; Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP): Grade of C-; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Overall score of 50 and no PTE Communicative score below 42; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 80.
