Become a teacher with AUTs Master of Teaching and Learning, a one-year professional qualification for students with a bachelors degree who want to work as an early childhood or primary/intermediate teacher.
This one-year intensive programme runs longer than the standard academic year, with courses totalling 180 points. The difference between this masters degree and the postgraduate diploma is a 30-point research course in your second semester.
Specialise in either early childhood or primary teaching, and study courses focusing on curriculum and education theory. Youll also complete teaching practicums in an early childhood setting or a primary/intermediate classroom.
The early childhood specialty curriculum courses have a focus on play-based learning in Aotearoa New Zealand, with strong links to our curriculum, Te Wh膩riki, and its four Principles Kaupapa whakahaere, and five Strands Taumata whakahirahira. You will also learn about responsive teaching, teaching for social justice, and being a critically reflective teacher.
Career opportunities
Graduates can apply for provisional registration with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand and teach in Aotearoa New Zealand.
If youre planning to continue with postgraduate study towards a doctoral qualification, you should note that this qualification doesnt automatically lead to doctoral study in education. You may need to complete additional courses in research methodologies at a masters degree level.
