What will I learn?

AUTs Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning is a one-year professional qualification to become a teacher. You can specialise in either early childhood or primary teaching. The courses you study cover curriculum and education theory, and youll complete teaching practicums in an early childhood setting or a primary/intermediate classroom.This is a one-year intensive programme that runs longer than the standard academic year, with courses totalling 150 points compared with the standard 120 points for most postgraduate programmes. After completing the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning you can apply for provisional registration with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. Youll complete eight compulsory courses in either early childhood or primary teaching. These courses cover curriculum, educational theory and professional practice. Courses have a strong focus on diversity and social justice, reflecting the multicultural nature of Auckland and the importance of inclusive teaching practice.The primary specialty curriculum courses cover the learning areas in the New Zealand curriculum as well as content related to responsive teaching, teaching for social justice and being a critically reflective educator. Youll learn about lesson design for diverse learners, various pedagogical approaches, inquiry for teaching and applying theory to practice.

Entry requirements

For international students

A bachelors degree with a B grade average or higher in level 7 courses

A degree with an education focus is not required, although undergraduate study in education courses will be an advantage. Relevant work experience in teaching is not a requirement, but some experience with 0–5-year-olds (early childhood education) or 5-12 year olds (primary/intermediate) will be important to provide evidence of suitability to work in this sector.

English Language Requirements:

IELTS (Academic) 7.0 overall with 7.0 in Writing, 6.5 in Reading, 6.5 in Listening and 7.0 in Speaking; or equivalent; TOEFL iBT score of 100; AUT Academic English with A grade; CAE minimum overall score of 185; PTE minimum overall score of 65.
