What will I learn?

Learn about companion animals and ways to support their health and wellbeing, with our BSc (Hons) Animal Science (Pet Behaviour and Welfare) degree at ARU in Writtle.With pet ownership levels in the UK rising in recent years, theres increased demand for services such as professional trainers and behaviourists.Our course combines elements of animal management and animal science, with modules covering behaviour and nutrition, as well as health, reproduction and biochemistry.As a student at ARU in Writtle, youll be taught by subject-specialist staff, and benefit from campus facilities including dedicated canine and equine centres, a small animal unit and a working farm. You'll take part in animal handling practicals involving work with a range of domesticated and captive animal species, as well as laboratory classes.Throughout your course, theres the chance to join 鈥榖ehind the scenes trips and other experiences.Our degree course is recognised by the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC). As a graduate, youll be ready to work as an animal trainer, animal training instructor, animal behaviour technician or clinical animal behaviourist. You can also apply for provisional membership of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors.

Entry requirements

For international students

To join the first year of our undergraduate course youll need one of the following.

  • GCE A levels from a recognised UK examination board.
  • An International Baccalaureate with a minimum of 24 points.
  • A university foundation course recognised by Anglia Ruskin University.
  • IELTS (Academic)
    • Overall 6.0 with 5.5 in each of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) 
  • TOEFL iBT
    • 80 overall with 17 in Writing and Listening, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking
  • Pearson PTE Academic
    • 60 overall with 59 in each of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
