What will I learn?

MA Applied Theatre: Community, Education, Wellbeing offers a post-graduate qualification in theatre, drama and performance practices that are rooted participatory practice in community, education and wellbeing settings.

Applied theatre is a relatively new term within modern theatre history but refers to drama or theatre processes that are participatory and intentional: the broad intention, is to improve the lives of the individuals and communities that take part.

Applied theatre can include, (but is not limited to): drama and theatre in education, community theatre, theatre for health and wellbeing, therapeutic applications of drama, and theatre for development. It can happen anywhere from schools to community halls, hospitals to prisons, homes to theatres. Applied Theatre: Community, Education, Wellbeing is for you if you are:

A graduate in the performing arts with a passion for social change

•

A graduate in education or youth work with an interest in theatre and drama

•

An emerging performance practitioner wanting to take your practice into participatory settings.

•

An established theatre practitioner with the desire to delve deeper into your practice and explore new ways of participatory working.

•

A creative educator in a school/college or alternative setting.

Assessment methods

The aim of the assessments is to provide real and simulated applied theatre contexts to demonstrate learning. Assessment has been carefully balanced across the programme to ensure that there is a range of different ways for students to demonstrate their learning across the suite of modules. Assessments are portfolio based and these can include: presentations, project facilitation, workshop facilitation, written documentation, visual essays, live performance and reflective journals.

Entry requirements

For international students

Students will have had experience in the performing arts and/or participatory arts practice with an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject at 2:2 or above or will have extensive professional experience in a relevant field. In addition, all applicants are invited for an informal interview and/or workshop where they are expected to demonstrate appropriate engagement in a practical workshop. An overall English Language level equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent) with no lower than 5.5 in reading writing, listening and speaking. TOEFL iBT Reading minimum 18, Listening minimum 17, Writing minimum 17, Speaking Minimum 20, TOEFL MyBest scores not accepted.
