What will I learn?

Overview

Our MSc Environmental Science for Sustainability programme provides advanced-level training for understanding and applying the principles and practice of environmental science to environmental sustainability challenges. You will be taught the practical skills and theoretical background needed to understand the impact of environmental processes and change on environmental sustainability and sustainable developments across land, water, atmospheric and biospheric realms. You will be equipped with an extensive and comprehensive tool-kit of advanced practical and analytical skills that can be readily applied to monitoring, modelling, mapping, understanding and managing environmental problems impacting upon, or generated by, your daily work. The programme is offered as a residential MSc (two terms of classes in London followed by an intensive two week period of laboratory and fieldwork) or blended/online (two terms of online classes followed by an intensive two week period of laboratory and fieldwork). It is available full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 years). In this way the programme would suit those taking it part time whilst in work, full time residential or full time online with a visit to London in the second semester.

Course detail

The Environmental Science for Sustainability MSc is a skills-focused programme that provides advanced level training in environmental science to tackle the sustainability challenges faced by private and public sector entities. Our programme will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the data, science and practice underlying a broad range of environmental issues, the role of human influence and natural variability, and the process of scientific research and management for sustainability. You will receive the field, laboratory and computer training needed to understand and manage environmental challenges impacting upon, or generated by, your daily work.

Teaching and assessment

We will use a delivery method that will ensure students have a rich, exciting experience from the start. Face-to-face teaching will be complemented and supported with innovative technology so that students also experience elements of digital learning and assessment. Some modules will be offered as face-to-face but with fully online alternatives. Other modules (e.g. the Field and Lab intensive modules) will be face-to-face only but intensively over a short period. This enables both part-time and full-time engagement in either blended/online or residential modes.

Career prospects

Graduates will be well suited to secure careers in local government, the private sector, national and international environmental and development NGOs, as well as research institutions (public and private). These include careers focused on Environmental Science (eg regulatory, compliance, consulting careers) and Environmental Sustainability (e.g. of private sector operations through Environmental and Social Governance). Students would also be prepared to undertake further doctoral research at King鈥檚 and other universities in a broad range of Environmental Science related topics.
