What will I learn?

On the Mathematical Modelling degree at Aberystwyth University you will learn how to use mathematical theory to develop predictive models in areas of science, engineering, and physics using mathematical analysis, experiments and quantified models to evaluate hypotheses or analyse real-world problems. At the same time, you will receive a firm grounding in the techniques of collection, classification, organisation, analysis and interpretation of data. Mathematicians and statisticians are highly valued by employers across many job sectors for their logical and analytical thought processes, problem-solving abilities and decision-making skills. The first two years of the Mathematical Modelling course will give you a broad introduction to important areas of mathematics, including algebra, calculus, geometry, statistics and mathematical analysis. You will be able to specialise in your final year and take advantage of our expertise by choosing from a wide range of optional modules based on your own interests. Topics may include analysis and partial differential equations, abstract and linear algebra, distributions and estimation, regression and anova and hydrodynamics. You will also undertake a compulsory career planning module as part of your course, which will enhance your employability prospects and enable you to develop valuable transferable skills. In studying Mathematical Modelling you will develop clear analytical thought processes, problem-solving abilities and the capacity for logical argument. Such skills are highly transferable and attractive to employers in a range of sectors. Graduates of Mathematical Modelling make significant contributions to vital areas such as science, engineering, technology and finance, and find employment in roles where numerical and data analysis is key. This degree is accredited by the IMA (Institute for Mathematics and its Applications), the UK's learned and professional society for mathematics, directly contributing to your recognition as a Chartered Mathematician. This degree is delivered through lectures, tutorials and practicals. You will be assessed through a combination of coursework, presentations, reports and examinations. You will be assigned a personal tutor throughout your degree course, who will help you with any problems or queries, whether these are academic-related or personal issues.
