What will I learn?

Why study this course?

This Secondary Computer Science with ICT course leads to Qualified Teacher Status and to the Master’s Level PGCE qualification. It prepares you to teach 11 to 16-year-olds and where possible, we also give you the chance to gain experience in the 16 to 18 age range.

We have strong partnerships with a number of schools across London and our trainees attain high results, with almost 100% of our students passing the course.

A Department for Education bursary is available for this course.

More about this course

This course covers both computer science and ICT skills, essential for a career in teaching. Computing in schools nowadays teaches pupils about programming as well as use of information technology software. This course will give you a combination of the new approaches with a more traditional ICT approach, allowing for deeper learning and enabling young people to become the innovators of the future.

You’ll learn to equip pupils with a strong command of the basics of computer science and ICT and to develop their interest in the latest technologies and the many potential career paths offered through study of this subject.

Assessment

There are formative progress assessments at key points throughout the course, enabling you to see how well you are doing and what you need to do next.

Your assessment will consist of four elements:

•

School placement A, where you will learn the elements of teaching

•

School placement B, where your teaching ability will be assessed in relation to the Teachers’ Standards

•

a Professional Practice Portfolio that is compiled across the year, detailing personal experiences and reflections on your development as a teacher, largely in relation to your practical teaching experience

•

the Educational Research Assignment, which allows you to explore an educational issue

There are no examinations.

You'll share feedback with your colleagues on the course, completing a weekly reflection and contribution to online discussions that will further develop your understanding of the secondary school teacher role.

Entry requirements

For international students

You will be required to have: a relevant UK degree, preferably grade 2.2 or equivalent; literacy and numeracy tests – these are university-based tests that you’ll be asked to undertake at your interview; a valid Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and Confirmation of Fitness to Teach (eg a London Metropolitan University Health Check) – you will be advised to apply for these after an offer is made. Academic IELTS - Overall score required: 6.0; Component scores required: Listening: 5.5, Reading: 5.5, Writing: 5.5, Speaking: 5.5. TOEFL iBT - Overall score required: 72; Component scores required: Listening: 17, Reading: 18, Writing: 17, Speaking: 20.
