What will I learn?

We鈥檙e internationally renowned for our excellent network of collaborations and strengths spanning the full breadth of pure and applied mathematics, operational research and statistics. Primarily, but not exclusively, in the first years of your iPhD, you鈥檒l strengthen your background with research-level courses, building a foundation for your future research.

Supervisors who are international experts in their field provide further in-depth training, supported by participation in research seminars and discussion. A conference attendance allowance is also available. Our postgraduates are highly sought after by other universities, businesses, NGOs and governments worldwide.

You鈥檒l have access to all modules available at the University, to specialised, in-house postgraduate courses and to three national postgraduate training networks in applied and pure mathematics (MAGIC), operational research (NATCOR) and statistics (APTS).

Assessment methods (Outcome qualification level): Progression from the taught phase to the research phase by taught courses and research project. For the research phase of iPhD, progression by annual reports, confirmation, interim thesis, thesis and viva voce.

Entry requirements

For international students

A UK Bachelor鈥檚 degree with upper second-class honours in a relevant subject, or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University, plus satisfactory performance at interview. If English is not your first language, you'll need an IELTS minimum level of 6.5 with a 6.0 in writing, reading, speaking and listening. Your awarded certificate needs to be dated within the last 2 years. If you need further English language tuition before starting your degree, you can apply for one of our pre-sessional English language courses.
