What will I learn?
This one year programme is equivalent to the final year of a degree course. Students should have already completed a Foundation Degree or HND in a relevant subject. For example, successful completion of the Foundation Degree Silversmithing and Jewellery at the University Centre Truro and Penwith. Unique to Cornwall, this course is aimed at students who wish to focus on both the vocational and the cultivation of an individual interpretation of personal craft practice. Through problem solving assignments you will be expected to take an energetic and creative approach to a range of craft skills, materials and technologies, developing a high level of professional competence. There will be the opportunity to develop traditional craftsmanship in areas such as raising, planishing, box making, making settings and findings, setting stones as well as researching new technologies.You will be encouraged to take on commissions and jewellery repairs to gain first-hand experience of working with real clients. The course is designed to develop the technical and design skills suitable for the student to enter the professional working environment. Your work will be exhibited in professional situations and exhibitions, we expect you to involve yourself in promotional opportunities, preparing work for public exhibition - which includes pricing - and having the ability to discuss your work with the public.On completion of the BA (Hons) Silversmithing and Jewellery, students can enter the craft industry or arts administration. Students could also progress to postgraduate study including teacher training. Graduates have been known to go on to work as; Professional Silversmithing Craftworker, Jewellery Designer-maker, Arts Administrator and an Art Gallery Director.
