The University offers a bachelor of arts (B.A.) and bachelor of science (B.S.) in African and African American studies.

Through a variety of disciplines鈥擡nglish, music, history, psychology, sociology, political science, geography, French, and economics鈥攕tudents learn about people of African ancestry living in the Americas, Africa, and Western Europe. Students gain knowledge and insights about the African American intellectual tradition as well as about other cultures, ethnic groups, and social movements. Students are prepared to be more connected and more related to all people, regardless of race.

Students gain experience outside the classroom through research and service projects in the community and through opportunities to present their work at regional academic conferences or to attend events such as Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration.

With a major in African and African American studies, students have maximum flexibility to pursue specialized academic interests in other areas. Students sometimes select a second major, ranging from communication to business or history, to complement the African and African American studies major.

The faculty assists each student in developing an educational program to meet his or her goals. Students are encouraged to consider the vast array of study abroad programs available through the University.

Careers

The multicultural background and research skills acquired through an African and African American studies major prepare students for professional careers in human services, education, law, business, community development, and journalism. Graduates often gravitate to leadership roles in the public sector, particularly urban institutions, intercultural relations, and international affairs.
