What will I learn?

Phenomena of the physical universe.

Physics has led to many of the world鈥檚 most exciting inventions, from computers and the World Wide Web, to lasers and X-ray technology. But when it comes to the natural laws of the physical universe, there is still much to be discovered.

In this program, you will study the nature and behavior of matter and energy, with a focus on classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, modern physics, quantum mechanics and thermal physics. You will learn to apply this knowledge to solve complex scientific puzzles in medicine, technology, energy and many other areas.

Physics majors gain hands-on experience designing and conducting experiments using the very latest research techniques and computer technologies. The department also offers special research opportunities through the department鈥檚 Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Entry requirements

For international students

Students must have 2.5 on a 4.0 GPA scale is required from secondary school. They must meet criteria for admission to university level study in home country. They should also satisfy the following English language requirements:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) minimum score of 525 on the paper test or 70 on the Internet-based test
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) minimum score of 6.0
  • Pearson (PTE) Academic score of 48
  • ELS Language Centers, pass of Level 112
  • Cambridge CAE (Certificate of Advanced English), pass
  • Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English), pass
  • Cambridge International "O" Levels, pass
  • English proficiency demonstration is waived for any applicant who has a previous degree at an accredited U.S. institution
