The University offers a bachelor of science (B.S.) in middle school mathematics for students who wish to obtain licensure for mathematics for grades five through eight.
This program is designed for students who only want to teach middle school mathematics. The program offers these students a shorter pathway to obtain middle school licensure. The program also better prepares future educators to navigate the unique developmental stage of middle school students (grades five through eight).
Students complete required mathematics courses in the following areas:
In addition, students complete professional education courses to prepare them for teaching.
Before graduating, all students work as student teachers and obtain experience in providing education to middle school students. In addition, many of our students provide help with mathematics for area students or work as math tutors in the Math and Writing Center at ISU.
Advisors work with each student in the selection of courses prior to registration each semester. Each student's study benefits from use of the Center of Mathematics Education Resource Library housed on the second floor of University Hall.
Mathematics teaching majors can join and participate in the student chapter of the honorary mathematics fraternity, Pi Mu Epsilon. Other opportunities include the University's Honors Program and study abroad programs鈥攚hich range from summer programs to a single semester or a full academic year in over 56 countries.
